How it works

Simple for staff. Seamless for pupils.

The pouch system is designed around the natural rhythms of the school day. Each pupil has their own dedicated pouch. They lock it themselves on arrival, tutors verify at registration, and students unlock phones, using the magnet, at the gate when the day ends.

1

Pupils lock their own pouch

On arrival, each pupil places their phone in their own dedicated lockable pouch and locks it themselves. Form tutors verify during registration that pouches are secured. The pouch stays in their bag throughout the day so their phone is always with them, just inaccessible.

2

Secure all day, no friction

The locked pouch cannot be opened without the unlock magnet. No complicated setup. Pupils carry the pouch in their pocket or bag throughout lessons, break, and lunch. Supply staff need no training beyond a laminated quick-reference card.

3

Students unlock at the gate

At the end of the school day, students place their pouch on the magnet at each exit point to unlock it themselves as they leave. The number of magnets can be tailored to your exits and what flow works best for your school.

💡
How many magnets does a school need? The number depends on how many exits your school uses and how you want to manage the flow at the end of the day. More magnets at more exit points means a faster, smoother process. We will recommend the right setup for your site when you get in touch.

The Ofsted-Ready School
Implementation Kit

Every PhoneAway subscription includes eight editable template documents to help your school put a strong, evidence-based phone policy in place. Each one is a starting point your team can adapt to reflect your school's own approach and values.

01

Mobile Phone Policy Template

Word .docx fully editable

A suggested policy structure covering scope, SEN exceptions, escalation procedures, safeguarding, sixth form and staff conduct. Includes a governor sign-off block and references to DfE January 2026 guidance. Adapt the language to reflect your school's approach.

Supports Ofsted: "What is your phone policy?"
02

Parent Communication Letter

Word .docx fully editable

A suggested parent letter covering how the system works, an FAQ addressing common concerns, and a return slip for capturing medical exceptions. The tone is supportive rather than prescriptive. Edit it to match the way your school communicates with families.

Supports Ofsted: "How are parents informed?"
03

Pupil Assembly Presentation

PowerPoint .pptx 8 slides

A suggested 8-slide assembly presentation your team can use as a starting point. It opens with data pupils find relevant, walks through how the day works in practice and includes a proposed FAQ slide. Presenter notes are on every slide. Amend the messaging to suit your school.

Supports Ofsted: "Do pupils understand expectations?"
04

Research Evidence Summary

Word .docx governor-ready

A suggested evidence summary drawing on published research including LSE (2015), UNESCO (2023) and Policy Exchange (2024). Provides a framework your governors can review and build on. Add your school's own context and experience as evidence accumulates.

Supports Ofsted: "What is the rationale?"
05

Staff Implementation Checklist

Word .docx printable & laminate-ready

A suggested set of day-to-day procedures your staff team can review and adopt. Covers the morning routine, daytime expectations, end-of-day process, proposed escalation steps, lost pouches and medical exceptions. Includes a laminate-ready quick-reference card for tutors and supply staff.

Supports Ofsted: "Is it applied consistently?"
06

Monthly Outcome Monitoring Log

Excel .xlsx 4 tabs, auto-calculating

A suggested monitoring framework covering behaviour, pouch administration, wellbeing and staff observations. Tracking these metrics over time gives your school a clear picture of how the policy is bedding in and provides evidence you can share with governors. Use the metrics that are most meaningful for your school.

Supports Ofsted: "How do you know it is working?"
07

Termly Staff Questionnaire

Excel .xlsx anonymous, aggregated

A suggested termly staff questionnaire covering implementation, learning, wellbeing and staff experience. Designed to be completed anonymously and to give school leaders an honest picture of how staff feel the policy is working in practice. Results aggregate automatically for easy review.

Supports: leadership review and staff voice evidence
08

Kit Overview & Procurement Summary

PowerPoint .pptx shareable with governors

A suggested overview presentation summarising the full document set. A useful starting point for a governor discussion or staff briefing. Adapt it to reflect the decisions your school has made.

Use for: governor discussions, staff briefings, leadership planning

Built for schools

Designed specifically for
UK secondary schools.

PhoneAway is built around what actually matters in a secondary school: reducing distraction, supporting pupil wellbeing, and giving your team a system that is straightforward to run every day.

🏫
Secondary schools & MATs

Phone-free from day one with everything you need to prove it.

From April 2026*, Ofsted inspectors assess mobile phone policies on every visit. Schools without a clear, communicated, and evidence-backed policy risk failing the Behaviour and Attitudes judgement. The DfE January 2026 guidance is unambiguous: all schools should be phone-free by default.

PhoneAway makes compliance straightforward. One order, one download, and your school has a governor-ratified policy, a parent letter, a pupil assembly deck, research evidence, staff procedures, and an outcome tracking system ready to show any inspector within 30 minutes of customising.

Common questions

Questions schools ask before getting started.

Straight answers to the things school business managers and headteachers want to know.

We have no formal phone policy. Does that put us at risk with Ofsted?
Potentially, yes. From April 2026*, Ofsted inspectors assess your phone policy on every visit as part of the Behaviour and Attitudes judgement. Schools that have been managing phones informally but have no written policy, no parent communication and no evidence of impact are in a more vulnerable position than those that do. The PhoneAway subscription includes template documents designed to help you put all of that in place.
How does the subscription work and what are we paying for each month?
You pay a monthly fee per pupil. That covers a dedicated lockable pouch for every pupil, access to the implementation document set, ongoing support and document updates when DfE guidance changes. Unlock magnets are purchased once as a separate one-off. Replacement pouches are available at cost. There are no hidden fees and you can cancel with 30 days notice.
How many unlock magnets do we need and how does the unlock process work?
The number of magnets depends on how many exits your school uses and how you want to manage the flow of pupils at the end of the day. More magnets at more exit points makes the process faster and smoother. We will talk through your site layout when you get in touch and recommend a setup that works for your school. Magnets are a one-off purchase, not part of the monthly subscription.
How do we handle SEN and medical exceptions?
The implementation documents include a suggested exceptions procedure covering pupils who need phone access for medical reasons, such as continuous glucose monitors, epilepsy monitoring or mental health safety plans. Each exception is managed individually by the SENCO and recorded confidentially. The suggested parent letter includes a return slip so parents can flag potential exceptions before the policy starts, which is the simplest way to manage them in advance.
Can we see the product and the documents before committing to a subscription?
Yes. Register your interest using the form on this page and we will get in touch to discuss next steps, including arranging a sample pouch for you to see the product in person and sharing a full summary of all eight implementation documents. There is no obligation to subscribe until you are ready.
